the backyard of the eye
patrick voigt
the landscape film tells the journey of the filmmaker and draughtsman patrick voigt through the lonely winter landscape of the swiss mountains. he describes the search for mystical places and the sensing of their atmospheres. the eye serves him as a gateway of perception, while the other senses in turn observe him observing himself. the process of unbiased looking and recognising becomes the centre of the story, based on the documented experiences of the writer henry david thoureau during his retreat to the forests of the east coast of america. there he read, wrote, reflected and explored nature over 2 years. an excerpt from his book "walden; or, life in the woods" frames the narrative journey of the filmmaker, who silently documents what reveals itself to him in the silence.
the film was made in close collaboration with musician and sound artist daniel de jong, whose main focus is the exploration of field recordings and soundscapes.
